- Board roles: Chair of Milestones Trust, a major charity for people with learning disabilities and mental health issues; Chair of Dorset Community Action; former non-executive director at Poole Arts Trust, operator of Lighthouse, an important regional UK centre for performing arts
- Academic: Emeritus Professor of corporate governance at Bournemouth University; former Visiting Professor of journalism at City, University of London; previous appointments at University of Westminster and London Metropolitan University
- Business: management consultant and former Director of Strategy for an investor relations and internet consultancy
- Journalism: former correspondent and editorial executive at Reuters and other news organizations
He is also author of a novel, The Fleetwood Half-Orphan Asylum, and writes two Substacks:
